Weekly Tech & Product Trends: Pixel puzzles, unboxing ASMR and smarter ASO

TL;DR

  • Hybrid-casual “dismantle-the-image” puzzles are proving themselves on revenue. Colony Flow has made $11M since mid-June.
  • Squishy-toy unboxing ASMR is huge but already crowded with clones.
  • Meta’s Muse shows there’s demand for personal AI agents, though Meta’s ad spend helped a lot.
  • Apple now lets you submit in-app purchases and assets separately from an app update. From April 2027, uploads will need the iOS 27 SDK.
  • ASO tools (Kickstart, AppTweak, Lite ASO) are adding AI agents and deeper store integrations.

Download and revenue figures are third-party estimates (Sensor Tower, AppMagic and similar), not official store data.

Games

“Dismantle-the-image” hybrid-casual puzzle

Colony Flow has made $11M in lifetime in-app revenue and 7.6M installs since mid-June. It reuses Pixel Flow’s mechanic with ants instead of conveyor belts. Pixel Flow itself grossed an estimated $2.4M in a single week. (Mobilegamer.biz)

Squishy-toy unboxing ASMR

Mystery Dumpling: Unbox ASMR had 9M downloads in its August launch month and 13M+ since. AppMagic counted 10+ dumpling clones in August alone, so this niche is saturating fast. (Mobilegamer.biz)

Humorous riddle and brain-teaser games

Brain Puzzle 3: Crazy Mind was in September’s worldwide top 10 by download growth. It climbed 16 places to No. 7, with big audiences in Indonesia, the Philippines, Brazil and Mexico. (Sensor Tower)

Vibe-coded local-city browser game

An AI-built “Taipei GTA” browser game reportedly drew 1.2M concurrent players in three days. The coverage comes mainly from Taiwan and Hong Kong media, there’s no official confirmation, and there’s possible IP risk. Separately, a Newzoo/Google whitepaper found that 46% of online consumers play browser games monthly. (Tom’s Hardware, Mobilegamer.biz)

Bus and traffic-jam sorting, still hot

Bus Fever Party! was #5 worldwide by downloads in September and #1 by download growth. (Sensor Tower)

AI & Tools

Personal AI agents

Meta’s Muse reached 5M downloads in 22 days and held #1 on the US iPhone free chart for 12 days. Sensor Tower attributes part of that to Meta’s own ad spend, and Muse is available only in the US and Canada. (Quartz)

TikTok creator signals

According to a third-party weekly roundup, AI-as-comedy-character posts are rising and AI language apps such as Pingo AI are running multilingual creator campaigns. (Lightreel)

US top searches were almost all sports this week, with no app or game signals. (Google Trends)

We found no notable September launches from Firebase, Mixpanel or Amplitude.

Platform & Store Changes

Apple Asset Library and unified IAP submission

You can now submit assets and in-app purchases separately from an app update and preview product pages before publishing. From April 2027, uploads must use the iOS 27 SDK. (Apple Developer)

Google Play Console metrics

September added Reach metrics and Day 2, 3, 14 and 28 retention. (Play Console what’s new)

Opportunities / What We’d Build

Scores aren’t included for this week.

  1. Dismantle-the-image puzzle (Games). An image-to-pixel grid, a queue of colored units that clears matching pixels, 30 levels and rewarded ads, with a fresh theme.
  2. Unboxing ASMR (Games). Tap-to-open boxes, a collectible grid, squish haptics and sound, and 20 skins. The niche is getting crowded.
  3. Riddle game (Games). 40 single-screen riddles with tap-and-drag, a hint system and localized text.
  4. Local-city browser game (Games). A WebGL map of one city with 10 missions, no login and a shareable link, using original characters and setting.
  5. Narrow AI agent (AI & Tools). One focused agent, such as inbox triage, with a single integration.

Our pick: the dismantle-the-image puzzle. Revenue proves the mechanic, the scope is small, and a new theme is enough to stand apart.
